Wednesday's Flower

Abutilon ‘Ashford Red’

Wednesday's Story

This bell shaped flower…

Hangs from its branch peacefully as I come upon it. In some ways it looks very demure and in other ways it holds such poise and yet, no ego is involved. For me it exemplifies loveliness, serenity and grace: three qualities that I strive for. As I continue to gaze upon it, I see the miracle of it blooming and thriving, and it gives me the courage to do the same.

points of interest

Flowers appear for most of the year on this upright shrub with maple-like, large, pale green leaves. Foliage may be variegated. The red flowers are bell-shaped and pendant. This shrub can be pruned into a neat tree for all season color, though note, its stems can be fragile.

general care

Grow in moderately fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Protect from frost or grow as houseplant in cooler climates. Prune lanky stems in spring. Water freely (but avoid water logging) in summer and sparingly in winter.

friday’s flower fact

A common name for the Abutilon is 'Flowering Maple' as it has palmated, maple-shaped leaves, though it is not related to the maple tree.
