Wednesday's Flower

Blue Boy Bachelor's Button

Wednesday's Story

With scissors in one hand…

And a glass mason jar filled with cool water in the other, I walked out my back door to cut some flowers from my cutting garden. After choosing one variety and cutting it a little haphazardly, they settled into their new habitat with some blooms ever so erect, and others dangling over the side…

points of interest

Upright plant with lance-shaped leaves and bright blue flowerhead with violet blue inner florets. Blooms late spring to midsummer. The “Boy Series” has especially bright green leaves, are earlier blooming than the species, and flowerhead are fully double. Lovely cutflower. Edible and used in Lady Grey blend of Twinings tea. Bachelor Button is also know as Cornflower as it often grew as a beneficial weed in corn fields, before endangered by conventional farming methods.

general care

Grow in well drained soil in full sun. Sow in situ in early spring, even on top of snow. If desired, allow to self-seed.

friday’s flower fact

Worn in folklore by young men in love, it was a sign that love would not be returned if the flower faded too quickly.
