As wonderful as they are, things can get a little prickly. Even in those trying times, always remember that there is a flower, a bright moment, to be found among the needles and thorns. Here is the perfect example that even from the prickliest of things, beauty and brilliance are there to be found.

A shrubby cactus that can form dense thickets with blue-green stems that are flattened rounds or ovals. The origin of the spines are awl-shaped and yellow, turning brown with age. From a yellow flower, forms a 1-3” long purple fruit.

general care

Where hardy, grow in moderately fertile, sharply-drained, gritty, humus-rich soil in full sun. From early spring to mid-autumn, water freely and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer 3 or 4 times. Keep dry at other times.

Fruit from the Prickly Pear cactus is used to make jellies, juices, candies and even vodka! Be careful to remove all of the skin and spines before consuming raw.
