Amazon Lily

Wednesday's Story

They don’t stand upright…

Or at least not in the way I expect flowers to bloom. Instead it droops and hangs upside down, which makes me wonder if it’s a little sad or maybe shy. As I continue to look on, I don’t think that it’s sad at all, but unique, delicate and lovely; a good reminder for me to slow down and experience the moment without judgement.

points of interest

Basal leaves are long-elliptic, wavy and dark green. In late summer, smooth stems bear fragrant, white flowers, arranged in umbels of up to eight, with stamens protruding. Each daffodil-like flower has six spreading sepals arranged in two rows, with the outer being longer and narrower than in inner ones, and six stamens that are fused into a cup.

general care

Grow in a temperate or warm greenhouse where not hardy and re-pot every 3-4 years in spring. Water freely during active growth and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer weekly, watering sparingly in winter. Outdoors, grow in pots or mixed flower beds in moderately fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil in light, dappled shade.
