Its name is derived from the Greek word “echino” which means “sea urchin” for its spiny flower center. This flower is used for herbal remedies and also attracts birds, bees and butterflies, while being deer-resistant. At the end of the season, let the flowers go to seed and goldfinches will feast on it. A number of hybrids have been introduced in varying colors such as white, orange, yellow and burgundy.

general care

Easy to care for, grow and is drought tolerant. Grow in full sun, loamy soil, and deadhead to prolong flowers through the summer blooming season.

Coneflower, also known as echinacea, has been found to stimulate the production of white blood cells in the body, which help fight infection. It has anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, and has been used to treat a variety of symptoms from colds to arthritis to ear infections to gingivitis.
