Autumn Beauty Sunflower

Wednesday's Story

A little bit of sunshine…

To cheer your day. Maybe you have the same view as I do of grey clouds and rain. Or maybe you don’t have a view of the sun and sky from wherever you are. Or maybe you need just a little extra cheer to brighten things up. Let this bright burst of yellow change your day into something more brilliant and cheerful.

points of interest

This bright yellow, mahogany red, bronze and bicolor sunflower mix is boldly reminiscent of fall leaves. Flowers are radial and daisy-like. Fast growing with hairy stems, broadly heart-shaped, rough leaves and branching habit. These bear pollen, which is good for bee forage. Harvest just as petals are turning color but not fully open for longest vase life.

general care

Direct seed after last frost or start in deep containers 3-4 weeks before planting out. Plant 18-24” apart and protect from rodents and deer. Select a full sun site with light, well-drained soil.

friday’s flower fact

During growth, sunflowers exhibit heliotropism; they tilt during the day to face the sun but stop once they are mature and begin blooming, generally facing east.
