Pansy Orchid

Wednesday's Story

Is it a pansy or an imposter..?

Upon closer inspection, I realized it was not a pansy once I noticed the foliage, which told me it was an orchid. It’s such a surprise, that in this vast world of flowers, there would be one that would mimic a pansy, or vice versa. This bloom does have some of its own intriguing nuances like the tie-dye center. It reminds me of the Rorschach ink blot tests.

points of interest

Gray-green basal leaves are linear, emerging around ovoid pseudobulbs at the base of the plant. Decorative, flat blossoms appear 2x/year in clusters of 2-5. The petals are white with a purple blotch at the base and the lip has an orange-yellow disk at the base. Delightfully fragrant.

general care

Considered a cool growing orchid, grow in moderate, indirect light in winter or high humidity shade in summer. Water plant frequently during hot summers, fertilizing every 3rd watering. Keep moist in winter. Plant in epiphytic orchid potting mix such as fine fir bark with perlite.

friday’s flower fact

Flowers persist about six weeks on the plant, but they do not last well when cut, and therefore are not suitable for corsages or cut flower arrangements.
