Upright stems and elliptical foliage are velvety on this small shrub. Flowers are tubular and bright orange; throat is yellow and orange spots appear on the 5-lobed face. Root system is rhizomatous, allowing for easy propagation. Disperses freely by seed in its native habitat of river banks, coastal cliffs and roadsides; it can be rather weedy. A popular houseplant due to their showy flowers and ease of growing.

general care

Grow in bright filtered or indirect light in a soil-based planting medium. Maintain high humidity, 65 degree farenheit temps, moist soil during growing season and dry soil during winter dormancy.

Kohlerias were very popular in Europe in the 19th century due to their colorful and exotic appearance and appeared in many horticultural magazines. Unfortunately, they almost entirely disappeared in the early 20th century, but are now making a comeback.
