Oh happy day…! I almost hear these two blooms sing to me, and their cheerful “faces” bring a smile to mine and lighten my heart. How wonderful to experience something so simple (though complex) as a flower changing a moment in time. Today, I hope you find joy in the simple, and that it brings a smile to your face and lightens your heart.

This bell shaped flower… Hangs from its branch peacefully as I come upon it. In some ways it looks very demure and in other ways it holds such poise and yet, no ego is involved. For me it exemplifies loveliness, serenity and grace: three qualities that I strive for. As I continue to gaze upon it, I see the miracle of it blooming and thriving, and it gives me the courage to do the same.

As I stood there with my mouth gaping open... I was flooded with all sorts of questions: Is it real? Is it really a flower? Did someone dye it that color? As my mind started to slow with questions and my mouth no longer gaping open, I spent the next hour and a half shooting this flower. In that time, I relived my own experience as I watched others notice this exotic flower, and how in that firs...

A shooting star or a snowflake…? Flowers allow me to imagine, to think and see differently. They are my escape from the everyday norm, they take my breath away, they help me to be more present and transport me to other places. This flower escorted me to our field at night and I could see it shooting across the vast Vermont sky. While standing there, I could also see it softly floating from th...

What one word would you choose to guide you through the year…? There are a lot of words out there that I could choose to guide me, but the one word that keeps coming to mind, especially when I’m not handling a situation well, is ‘grace’. So, I’ve decided to make ‘grace’ my word for 2017. I’ve never done this before, so it’s a little scary, as I know I will be far from perfect ...

To see a flower blooming… Is a unique opportunity, and one that doesn't come often and typically not fast enough. In knowing this and wanting to share with you the many facets of flowers, through my photography and the magic of technology, I have created a short time lapse video of one of my favorite bulbs blooming during the holiday season. I hope you enjoy watching this elegant bud blossom ...

It was all the rage back in the late ‘80’s... A toy that could be tossed in the house, was colorful, neat to hold and just plain fun to look at. It was definitely a favorite toy of mine, even as an adult. Fast forward: I was shooting at the LA Zoo and Botanical Garden and came across this toy again, but this time, to my surprise, it was flowering from a bush! I so wanted to grab and toss it...

Through my view finder… I see the fine details, starting with a single droplet hanging from the stamen and the softly curled up petals creating its bell-shape. As I focus my lens, I see that there are fine, white pinpoints that decorate the outer petals and notice the wide variety of colors not easily seen from afar. This small vista creates a renewed sense of awe and makes me want to pick up...

It’s raining and glooming in Chicago… Where I’m currently traveling. I needed an umbrella to protect me from the wet, cold raindrops. I found a parasol instead, which won’t do a great job of protecting me from the rain, but it does brighten my day…
