ONE PARTICULAR BLOOM Jun 02, 2019
One Particular Bloom

As I arrived in Vermont over a week ago, I was welcomed by the many spring blooms in my gardens. I had been away for some time, and it was joyous to see the pops of color and buds coming along. It put a smile on my face as I stopped to look at all that was around me. All of it brought me such joy and delight, especially one particular bloom.

On a breezy day with their long, slender stems, they look as if they are waving to me and welcoming me home as I drive past them into our garage.

This one particular bloom is my current obsession of the many flowers in my gardens. It’s growing in my front shade garden by the garage. It was at least five, maybe six years, ago, that I planted three small pots of this perennial Anemone flower. The second and third years, I was very disappointed as hardly any of them came back. A few years later though, I’m guessing I now have over a hundred of them in my garden!

With the many, many blooms now, I became more aware of them and started to see them as sweet, animated caricatures. At first glance, they are a simple bloom. They look like the typical flower I doodle with five simple petals surrounding a center circle. They also have the same long, slender stem I draw. Unlike my doodles though, they are alive, living flowers that seem to have a personality, and a very happy one at that. On a sunny day they stand erect and look as if they have big, sunny smiles on their “faces.” On a breezy day with their long, slender stems, they look as if they are waving to me and welcoming me home as I drive past them into our garage.

For me, what really confirmed that they have personality is how they react to a gloomy, rainy day. They curl up to protect their delicate petals from wet, heavy raindrops, just as I want to curl up and sit inside to protect myself from the rain. They also look a little melancholy on a rainy day, and I know I can relate to that, too.

Yes, these are some of my quirky perspectives that I often have about each and every bloom I grow or come across. I feel how alive they are and how each bloom has a personality. They allow my imagination to run and create the many things that make up each of their persona, and it makes me smile. Yes, once again flowers have brought such joy and delight into my life.
