MY TWO CENTS
You’re only here for a short visit. Don’t hurry, don’t worry. And be sure to smell the flowers along the way… Lovely to think of a major golf champion having this insight. From the little information I could find, it seems from his autobiography that this was his motto for living. It would be a great motto for all of us to live by, and it seemed to do well by him.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Walter Charles Hagen (December 21, 1892 – October 6, 1969) was of German descent and born in America. He started his career as a caddie at the Country Club of Rochester helping to support his family with the ten cents he earned each time he caddied. Hagen played golf there on off-hours and the head professional, Alfred Ricketts, helped him with his playing. He improved greatly with all of the practice and played his first tournament in 1912 at the Canadian Open and came in 11th place, which was quite impressive for a first tournament and being just 19 years old. Hagen was also a very good baseball player and turned down a chance to tryout for the Philadelphia Phillies, in order to play in the U.S. Open, which he won that year in 1914. He had a profound affect on the golf world by helping to increase the awareness of golf and, with that, helping to improve the wages of professional golfers. Hagen worked with Wilson Sports in designing golf clubs and making them more affordable. Also, he was well-known for wearing expensive tailored clothing and he may have been the first millionaire athlete. He is in third place in tournament wins after Arnold Palmer (2nd) and Tiger Woods (1st), and in recent years, Hagen has been ranked in the top ten greatest golf players by both Golf Digest and Sports Illustrated/Golf Magazine.
