NO WEEDING REQUIRED Jul 02, 2017
Red Shirley Poppy

I love my perennial and cutting gardens in Vermont. There is always something to be planning all year round. I get the chance to peruse the flowers and seeds at the local garden centers and catalogs, plan each garden, play in the dirt, and watch a living painting emerge in our backyard, giving me joy all spring, summer and fall.

Yet another lesson flowers have to teach me: to let go and let it happen, as there is great joy and liberation in doing so and in experiencing nature.

Then there are our wildflower gardens we planted a couple of years ago in the meadow behind our house, grown from seeds we purchased from the Vermont Wildflower Farm. Though I do think growing wildflowers is a little ironic, and every year we do experience a little angst at the beginning waiting to see if anything will bloom, but now as the season has filled in I look forward to them each day. Whenever I get a chance I will take a look out the window to see what colors are prevailing. Then there is my most favorite time in the evening when my husband and I will go take a walk to see what has evolved since the last time we were there, and each time I feel that child-like excitement welling up to see what is coming.

Our wildflower meadow in JuneI have found the wildflower gardens are quite different from my other gardens and they have been a great addition, as not there’s no weeding required, but they offer a new surprise every day. They give me a chance just to accept and enjoy, to be happy for what I find with no expectations, and to look forward to what surprises will be there tomorrow. I find them to be less demanding as a gardening experience then my perennial and cutting gardens, though those gardens have also added so much to our view and life.

Yet another lesson flowers have to teach me: to let go and let it happen, as there is great joy and liberation in doing so and in experiencing nature.

Please comment below about your favorite kind of garden and why.
