THE RARE HANDWRITTEN NOTE Jul 30, 2017
The Rare Handwritten Note

Every time I walk out to our mailbox, I’m hopeful that nestled in between the bills, catalogs and junk mail, I will find that rare and treasured handwritten note. I don’t know about you, but for me it’s the motivation for walking to the mailbox, as there is that anticipation and optimism that I just might be the lucky recipient of a note from a friend who has taken the time to think of me.

She thoughtfully took out stationary, a pen, and found a place to sit and move that pen across the paper sharing her thoughts and her time. Think of how rare that is.

When I do receive one of these notes, I feel the excitement of opening it to read its content. I first go to my desk and from my top lefthand drawer I get my Swiss Army knife. I open it to cut along top edge of the envelope creating a clean, crisp opening for me to pull out its contents and preserve it for reading again later. As I unfold the note, I sit there appreciating the gift, and that she didn’t send a text or another email to fill my inbox. Instead, she thoughtfully took out stationary, a pen, and found a place to sit and move that pen across the paper sharing her thoughts and her time. Think of how rare that is.

I recently received a longhand letter in the mail, and I’m looking forward to continuing the conversation with pen in hand. Maybe my thoughts will drift about my summer excursions, or how much I appreciate her friendship or miss spending time with her because we live too far apart. Once written, I know I will feel a real sense of accomplishment of having lifted pen to paper, sealing it, mailing it and continuing this intimate conversation.
