MY TWO CENTS
A garden is a grand teacher. It teaches patience and careful watchfulness; it teaches industry and thrift; above all it teaches entire trust… Flowers and Gardens have taught me many things: patience, understanding, vulnerability and strength, to name a few. They are the teacher I would have never imagined during my school years, but one that has had a profound effect on me.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Gertrude Jekyll was born in Mayfair, England. Before I continue, though, are you as curious as I was to know if her last name ‘Jekyll’ has anything to do with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde?!? Surprisingly, in an indirect way it does. Her brother was friends with Robert Louis Stevenson who borrowed their last name for his novella. I have wondered about that every time I have come across her name. More importantly, Jekyll was a very influential gardener both in England and America. She wrote over a thousand articles for various publications such as Country Life and The Garden. She developed and created more than 400 gardens. Jekyll also wrote many books about gardening and she was a painter, photographer and designer. She often collaborated with Sir Edwin Lutyens, a renowned architect.
