MY TWO CENTS
In joy or sadness flowers are our constant friends… His quote reminds me of how amazing it is that flowers and friends comfort us in our sadness and bring joy to so many moments. I know flowers have become constant friends of mine… a very poetic quote.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Okakura Kakuzo (February 14, 1862-September 2, 1913) was born in Yokohama, Japan. His family owned a silk warehouse and his name ‘Kakuzo’ translates in Japanese to ‘warehouse at the corner’. He was not fond of his name and replaced it with the Chinese character for the same name, but it means ‘awakenening boy.’ He was sent to an American school in Tokyo where he learned English and was introduced to the Bible and hymns. While attending this school his mother died, and he was moved from home to home while his father looked for another wife. Okakura’s experience while attending the American School broadened his view of the world and he became very involved with the art of Japan. He helped found the Japan Art Institute along with publishing three books: ‘The Ideals of the East,’ ‘The Awakening of Japan,’ and his most well-known book, ‘The Book of Tea.’ He also spent much time traveling the world, and he was the first head of the Asian Art Division of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
