Photographing flowers in my studio has its own challenges, but shooting outside has challenges I have no control over: the sun, the clouds, the rain, and especially the wind, tests my patience. I can make adjustments to my camera to help compensate for each of the elements, but that can affect the quality of my image. To try to get the image I really want, I have learned from the wind that I must sit still while it blows. I must be prepared and be ready for when it stops. I must learn to be patient. So, is the wind my nemesis or mentor?
The wind blows when I would prefer it didn’t, but it’s just trying to teach me to slow down, be patient and be in the moment; a form of meditation.
There are times when it’s the perfect opportunity for me to photograph in my garden or I have traveled to a botanical garden for the day and the wind has picked up. That’s when it feels like the wind is my nemesis. All I want to do is go search out my favorite flower of the day to shoot and find its beauty to share, but it feels like the wind sees me and is snickering at me saying good luck…ha, ha, ha. So, is it my nemesis or mentor?
My hope for the best day shooting outside is a cloudy, windless day, but that often is not the case. The wind blows when I would prefer it didn’t, but it’s just trying to teach me to slow down, be patient and be in the moment; a form of meditation. All in all, I will have to admit that the wind is not my nemesis, but indeed my mentor. Who knew I could learn so much from it.
