THE PERFECT WHITE BLANKET Jan 06, 2015
Peruvian Daffodil - The Perfect White Blanket - The Blooming Blog by Floating Petals. Inspiration, reflection and beautiful flower photography to nurture the soul.

As I look out my window from my desk, I am invigorated by the soft, fluffy white snowflakes falling all around, and though the winter days here in the Northeast can often be very grey and dreary, I find that snow changes a nondescript day into something magical. It creates excitement and wonder with each snowflake being singular and distinct, many snowflakes making a snowball, and many more creating the perfect white blanket.

The perfect white blanket that tucks in all of my perennials, bulbs, tubers, and seeds for the winter as they prepare themselves underground for the spring and summer to come. They lay there in their dormant, sleeping stage and though they are not actively growing, they are still taking the time to prepare, to gather their nutrients.

And with this reflection I find that once again flowers are trying to teach me another lesson; that in order to do my best work, to be the best “flower” I can be, I have to nurture myself. I have to find the time to get the rest, the nutrients, to be able to grow with such beauty and grace just as a flower does. So, I think as I watch the perfect white blanket cover the ground, I will spend a little time cuddled under my own blanket and allow myself to be nurtured.

Share with me how you nurture yourself, especially in the off season of your winter or summer.

  1. Getting outside the house, as much as possible, even in the cold and dreary times, is critical to me. Being in the natural world surrounding us while walking down a frozen road remains a nurturing experience. There is some defiance to the effort, as in “Oh yeah? Nasty cold weather can’t keep me down – watch this, you yucky skies.” So we bundle up, leaving only our eyes unsheathed and hit the road for a walk. And watch the sleeping trees bend in the wind; see the red tailed hawk hunting for anything to eat; catch a moment of sunshine with hope that spring will eventually come.
In the alternative – Florida….Can be super nurturing. ::))
