I’m always trying to learn more about flowers. Below are a few things I have learned about some of the summer flowers that are growing in my garden. If you have any summer flower tidbits, I would love it if you would share them with me below in the comments section.
1. SNOW IN SUMMER?!?
This is a flower that I added to my garden last year. I planted it, not only for its sweet, white flower, but for its very clever name. It is a great border flower for my garden. It reseeds easily, but if it ends up in places in the garden that are not preferred its can easily be pulled out. After flowering, it can be mowed to 2” to deadhead and tidy up its appearance.
2. CALIFORNIA POPPY
This is another flower that reseeds very easily and has done so in my cutting garden. But now that it keeps coming back, I would prefer that it didn’t, as I like to plant different flowers each year. It can be grown in an annual border, meadow, or in a gravel or rock garden, but I would personally recommend planting it in a meadow as it seems most suited for that type of environment.
3. PRINCESS DIANA CLEMATIS
An interesting fact that I learned about this particular clematis bloom is that it may be cut back every spring as flowers are borne on the current years growth, unlike most garden clematis blooms which grow on previous year’s old wood.
4. BLUE BOY BACHELOR BUTTON
This variety is easy to grown and very sweet as a cut flower. It’s edible and is often used in blends of tea (including Twinings Lady Grey). The bachelor button is also know as a Cornflower, as it was often grown as a beneficial weed in corn fields, before endangered by conventional farming methods.
Share with me below any summer flower tidbits you have.
