MY TWO CENTS
I want it said of me by those who knew me best, that I always plucked a thistle and planted a flower where I thought a flower would grow… Not only is this a very thoughtful statement, but very specific one: to say not only does he want to plant a flower, but to take the time to make sure where he plants the flower or good deed that it would be nurtured and grow. I can appreciate both taking time and effort to remove the thistle as well as to plant with meaning. I would wish for the same to be said about me, though I have work to do to receive such a compliment.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809-April 15, 1865) was the 16th President of the United States of America. He grew up in Kentucky, and from my reading in elementary school, he was a veracious reader and often was found reading by candlelight. Lincoln was primarily self-taught, became a lawyer in Illinois and was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives and then to the United States House of Representatives. During his tenure, he was at the forefront of modernization with banks, tariffs and railroads. When he was elected as President, seven southern slave states left the Union and became the Confederate States of America, which was the catalyst of the Civil War. President Lincoln was closely involved with the war as he also continued to work on ending slavery in the United States. Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1864 by John Wilkes Booth; a man, and a president, who died too early.
Since elementary school I have always admired and felt a connection to Abraham Lincoln. I enjoyed learning about him, and no doubt in elementary school in more simple and positive ways, but I think from what I have learned that those who did know him best would have thought he indeed ‘plucked a thistle and planted a flower where [he] thought a flower would grow’.
