MY TWO CENTS
In wisdom gathered over time I have found that every experience is a form of exploration…That is how we grow and learn and grow some more and truly experience life. What beautiful words Ansel Adams has shared, along with his amazing photography.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Ansel Easton* Adams (February 20, 1902 – April 22, 1984) was born in a neighboring town of San Francisco, CA. He had a very close relationship with his father, Charles Hitchcock Adams. Adams had lots of energy as a child, which made it challenging for him in school. With private tutoring and attending private school he graduated from 8th grade.
For all of the years I’ve admired Adams photography, I never knew his first art and profession was playing the piano. He pursued this career until the age of 26. At this point, Adams felt he would not get to the level of pianist as he attained to be, so he focused his efforts on photography. He married Virginia Best of Best Studio (a piano studio) in Yosemite Valley in 1928. He and Virginia continued running and teaching at the studio from after her father’s death until 1971. This supplemented their income, as Adams became a well-known photographer.
Adams loved and experienced as much of the outdoors as possible. This love “affair” can be seen and felt in his photography. He had a very specific point of view with his photography. It was “pure or straight photography” using a very small aperture (f/64) which gives great depth of field. From the philosophy of Edward Carpenter’s Towards Democracy, the purpose of Adam’s art, both piano and photography, was to inspire others, and inspire he did.
