6AM IN THE MIDST OF THE FOG Dec 09, 2014

I got out of my Jeep Wrangler and gathered my equipment. As I turned to the field, I’m stunned by the beauty and peacefulness around me, and I paused to think about the events that led me here.

It all started back in the Fall of 2013 when I was shooting some mums for Wednesday’s Flower in our front yard and our plumber Jack stopped by to put a new sink in our bathroom. As he was leaving that day, he asked why I was shooting the flowers and if I would be interested next May to see some local wild orchids and other various flowers. I, of course, was completely delighted with this idea and told him I would look forward to it.

Fall ended, and we all survived a very long winter, and as May came around, I started to wonder if Jack would remember his generous offer, and not but a couple of weeks later did he arrive at our door ready to show me some wild orchids.

The first trip was just down the road from us, and how he ever came across these orchids through all of that bramble is still a mystery to me. They were beautiful in their wild surrounding and though I would have loved to have come back and photographed them, my schedule did not allow.

Jack has come by twice since and the third time we went to a field in Dorset, Vermont. This field is in the middle of Dorset yet so removed from anything except for a dirt road, a charming marble house, and the field where we came across these delightful Canada Lilies. I was so surprised a place like this existed and so appreciative to have been introduced to it.

As I stood there that early foggy morning, I appreciated all of the events that lead me to this one moment. A moment I will always treasure, and for that I thank Jack for sharing his love of flowers and nature with me. A gift beyond compare.

Share with me a memorable moment that you would never have had if it weren’t for someone unexpected in your life to lead you there.

  1. I love it when someone generously shares some bit of local knowledge that leads you to something virtually in your backyard that you never knew existed before! It reminds me of when I client told me about the Rails to Trails bike trail that wind from the New York State line in Rupert up to Castleton. A wonderful treasure that’s given me hours of pleasure over the past few years. Amazing that I’d driven alongside it countless times, but never before knew it existed. Here’s to all the people willing to share these things!
