For the last couple of years I have picked a word to help guide me throughout the year. (Check out my word for 2017 and words for 2018). I have found that it’s very helpful in my quest on working on being a better person, though I know I still have much to accomplish on this front. This year I have decided that my one word to guide me through 2019 is gratitude. One way I have worked on being grateful is my daily gratitude journal where I list at least eight, if not more, things to be thankful for. I do love it as it allows me to engage in gratitude on a daily basis, and it’s a great way to reflect. Admittedly though, it doesn’t always go beyond those few minutes. So, I have decided that I want to be more appreciative and grateful and to do so, I need to have it as my focus all year long. This will hopefully help me be more aware of all that I have in my life, all that surrounds me in this amazing world we live in and to become a more grateful and happier person.

What has helped me to define my word for 2019 is a book I recently read called “Thanks a Thousand” by A.J. Jacobs. Jacobs takes the simple idea of a cup of coffee and thanking the many people who are involved in creating his one cup of coffee. Thus the name, as there are a thousand and more of whom participate in creating each single cup of coffee. How crazy is that?! It makes me stop and think of the many people who are a part of creating, making, or producing any single item. Also after reading his book, it has made me more appreciative of the many people who do the many jobs I don’t think about along with the many jobs I would prefer not to do myself.
I will start this year out with appreciating “Thanks a Thousand” and A.J. Jacobs for giving me perspective on all those I should feel gratitude for in a way I never thought of. Also, for helping me to define my one word to guide me through 2019: gratitude.
